Madison County Sheriff John Mehr issues this TELEPHONE SCAM ALERT.
Our Office is being flooded with concerned citizens receiving threatening calls about missing jury duty or a summons for missing a court date. A deceased former MCSO Deputy’s name, James Marshall, or Keith Nelson is being used.
The caller claims the recipient has failed to appear for jury duty and a summons has been issued and that they are facing a fine and will be arrested unless payment is made using a green dot or other type of money card. Sheriff Mehr added that our local Madison County Sheriff’s office number even appears on their caller I.D.to make it appear legitimate.
Please be aware!! THIS IS A SCAM. The Sheriff’s Office does not make threatening phone calls and this is just an attempt to steal your money.
