TBI Agents Investigating Shelby County Officer-Involved Shooting
UPDATE: 6/25/23 (6:34 p.m. CT): The man who died in this incident has been identified as 21-year-old Jarveon Hudspeth.
At the request of 30th District Attorney General Steve Mulroy, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred this morning involving the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 9:00 Saturday morning in the 4100 block of Rosswood Avenue, where, as part of an enforcement action, a deputy approached a parked car, after which the deputy tried to stop the driver from leaving the scene. For reasons still under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in the man driving off and dragging the deputy approximately 100 yards. At some point, the deputy fired his service weapon at least once, striking the driver, who drove about a half mile further before stopping, and subsequently died on the way to the hospital. The deputy has been hospitalized with a variety of serious injuries.
TBI agents continue to work to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters; that decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
