DSCC’s Featherston Receives Excellence in Teaching Award

Dyersburg, Tennessee – Karin Featherston, emergency medical technician (EMT) and paramedic instructor at Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC), was presented the 2017 Full Time Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award by the Tennessee Emergency Medical Services Education Association (TEMSEA) July 12. The award was presented at the TEMSEA education conference awards banquet held at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro.

Featherston has been employed with DSCC since 2010. She began her tenure as an adjunct instructor for the EMT program. She has served as the primary instructor for the DSCC paramedic program since 2012 and has assisted in the success of the program being ranked as one of the top five programs in the State of Tennessee.

Featherston earned an EMT Basic Certificate from DSCC in 2000 and a Paramedic Certificate from Jackson State Community College in 2001. She earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing from DSCC in 2009 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from The University of Memphis in 2013. In 2014, Featherston earned a Critical Care Paramedic Certificate from Vanderbilt University Medical Center – Lifeflight and a Master of Science degree in Emergency Nurse Practitioner from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in 2017.

The TEMSEA Full Time Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award is awarded to faculty who maintain high academic achievement standards, initialize a creative teaching methodology, maintain professional and academic rapport with colleagues and students, demonstrate use of innovative classroom presentation skills and have a positive, caring and inspiring attitude.

The TEMSEA, originally organized in 1988 as the West Tennessee EMS Educator’s Association, formed in an effort to provide educators a unified voice in EMS education was conducted. In early 1990, educators from middle and east Tennessee joined the association, prompting the named to be changed to the TEMSEA.
