UT Workshops to Help Small-Scale Poultry Farmers
Backyard Poultry 101: Learn About Production, Processing, Packaging and Marketing
SPRING HILL, Tenn. – Understanding production practices, proper business planning and risks are important considerations for any farm business says Hal Pepper, financial analysis specialist with University of Tennessee Center for Profitable Agriculture. “Poultry farmers who understand the exemptions and regulations associated with direct marketing processed poultry are in a better position when it comes to evaluating value-added opportunities.”
In August and October, Pepper along with John Goddard and Adam Hopkins from UT Extension, will present a workshop designed to help poultry farmers learn the basics of backyard poultry production and how to manage the risks of on-farm poultry processing.
The workshop “Backyard Poultry 101” will present information about raising poultry, USDA poultry exemptions, considerations of getting started, marketing and labeling requirements and business management. The workshop is designed for small poultry farmers who want to raise birds and for those who want to consider processing their birds and direct marketing the meat.
“Backyard Poultry 101” will be held in the following locations:
August 28 – Greeneville, Tenn.
October 25 – Pikeville, Tenn.
October 26 – Newport, Tenn.
October 27 – Jasper, Tenn.
There is no registration fee, but pre-registration is required as space is limited.
The workshop in Greeneville will begin at 9 a.m., in Pikeville and Jasper at 10 a.m. and in Newport at 4:30 p.m. All times are local. Check-in and networking will start 30 minutes prior to these times and the training will last about 2 hours. The pre-registration deadline for the workshop in Greenville is August 21; Pikeville is October 18; Newport is October 16; and Jasper is October 20. Pre-registration is required as space is limited and a meal is provided.
Pre-registration for each workshop will be handled by the local Extension office in Greene, Bledsoe, Cocke and Marion counties.
