Freed-Hardeman University Freshmen Sign-Up for Donor Registry to Save Lives

Henderson, Tennessee — (Aug. 25, 2023) — Freed-Hardeman University’s nursing program, in partnership with Earl Young’s Team, hosted a blood cancer donor drive Monday, Aug. 21, 2023, where 130 freshmen signed up to be a part of the donor registry.

“That was 42% of all those involved, which is a phenomenal participation rate,” FHU Department of Nursing Chair Chris White said. “By adding to the registry, they have given people in need hope.  At some point in the future, if matched, they can give the gift of life.”

Through FHU and Earl Young’s Team, students learned about how a cheek swab can help fight blood cancer through donor awareness. Recruiting young, healthy donors on college campuses provides patients with the best outcome. Donors are kept in the registry until they reach 55-years-old. Earl Young, a graduate of Abilene Christian University, promotes the mission of the organization on faith-based campuses.

Since the first event in fall 2019, FHU family and friends have contributed 1,098 donors to the registry. “To our knowledge, we’ve had six people to match someone in need,” White said. “These events are very special to us, and we are looking forward to conducting additional drives on campus and off to continue this legacy of giving."

FHU seniors Clark Endsley and Brayden Martin helped during Monday’s event. The two signed up on the registry two years ago. Endsley learned he was a match in May and became the 100th donor from a drive associated with FHU’s partner, Earl Young’s Team. Martin is a student ambassador for the organization.

"I'm very thankful for our FHU students and their willingness to give of themselves,” White said.  Learn more about Earl Young’s Team at earlyoungsteam.org.
