JSCC launches new center in Gibson County

Director of new center announced

JACKSON, TENN. – Jackson State Community College (JSCC) has announced the opening of its new Gibson County Center. The full-service center will offer career-ready degrees in healthcare, dual-enrollment opportunities for all Gibson County schools, and feature pathway programs allowing credit transfer to Tennessee 4-year public institutions, all without having to drive to Jackson to take classes.

Students can complete associate degrees through the center in a variety of subject areas. Courses are offered through flexible options like online, hybrid, traditional daytime, and evening classes. Middle college courses, which are offered to high school students looking to earn an associate degree at the same time as their high school diploma, will also be available through the center for all of Gibson County.

“Building and maintaining our connection with the Gibson County community is a top priority for Jackson State,” said Dr. Peter Hanson, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs. “This new center will give us the opportunity to strengthen those connections and offer our students the resources they need throughout their education with Jackson State.”

Jackson State Community College has also announced its appointment of the center’s new director, Sherry Channell. Channell has worked with JSCC since 2017. Before her appointment as the director at the Gibson County Center, Channell worked as an Adjunct Faculty member at JSCC and as the Assistant Director of Nursing Student Services at The University of Memphis at Lambuth.

In her role at The University of Memphis, she assisted students with the registration process as well as overcoming any barriers they may have had. She was also responsible for managing tutoring and mentoring programs for nursing students and attending local recruiting events.

“I’m so excited to be stepping into my new role as Director of the Gibson County Center,” said Channell. “As a resident of Gibson County, I’m thrilled to be able to support our community and students through the new center.”

Channell has held various positions in the fields of Higher Education, Career Counseling, and Adult Education. She obtained both her Education Specialist and Master of Arts in Human Services degrees from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, and her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

The center opened its doors July 1 and currently hosts JSCC on-ground classes for the college’s Middle College program. An official ribbon cutting is tentatively planned to take place later this fall.
