WESTTEACH CLASS MEETS SEPT. 27 IN JACKSON
MARTIN, Tenn. – The fifth WestTeach class sponsored by the University of Tennessee at Martin’s WestStar Leadership Program will meet Wed., Sept. 27, in Jackson. The 17-member class of K-12 teachers representing 17 West Tennessee school districts and 13 counties will meet at Jackson Energy Authority Training Center for an 8 a.m. welcome and opening session and conclude with a 5 p.m. reception and dinner at the Jackson Chamber.
The Jackson session is one of four WestTeach sessions and focuses on the “humanity of leadership.” The program includes a poverty simulation at Jackson Energy Authority, a “models for success” session and lunch at Liberty Technology Magnet High School, and presentations at the Jackson Chamber by the Jackson-Madison County School System, the Jackson Police and Madison County Sheriff’s departments, and several non-profits.
WestTeach was a class project created by the 2017 WestStar Leadership class as a teacher-development initiative. A new class is selected annually by the program’s advisory committee following teacher nominations by school superintendents and directors. West Tennessee teachers selected to participate learn about the region’s economic needs and opportunities. Each class also meets with regional industry and community leaders to learn more about what their students might experience outside of the classroom both in the workplace and beyond. Seventy-three teachers have completed the program.
The Leaders Education Foundation is the program’s signature sponsor. Other WestTeach sponsors include ATA CPAs & Advisors, Security Bank in Dyersburg, SIC Project Management, Tennessee District of the TRANE Company, Cary and Lalania Vaughn of Millington, and the Community Foundation of West Tennessee.
