Local chapter will celebrate sorority history with Founders Day Brunch

Keynote speaker will be sorority’s national president

JACKSON (TN) — For 111 years, since January 13, 1913, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. have served their communities with programming and initiatives focused on educational development, physical and mental health, economic development, political awareness and international awareness. The Jackson (TN) Alumnae Chapter of the sorority will celebrate that service and commitment with a Founders Day Brunch at 11 a.m. this Saturday.

This will be the chapter’s first time commemorating Founders Day with a brunch. In the past, JTAC has held programs at local churches within the community. The brunch will allow sorority and community members to fellowship with each other.

“Having a brunch will allow us to fellowship with each other and with our community supporters,” JTAC president Wanda Newsom said.

The 25th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Dr. Paulette C. Walker will be the keynote speaker for a sold-out audience of sorority and community members at the Jackson Country Club. Attendants will honor the 22 women who founded the sorority while highlighting the work and impact of the sorority’s other members.

More than 350,000 women are members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Of those women, over 100 are a part of the Jackson (TN) Alumnae Chapter of the sorority.

“We are a chapter of 129 members,” Newsom said about the brunch’s theme, “but we operate as one with ‘One Connection, One Bond and One Sisterhood,’ which allows us to Move Forward with Fortitude.”

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. The organization is a sisterhood of predominantly Black, college-educated women. The Jackson (TN) Alumnae Chapter is one of over 900 collegiate and alumnae chapters.
