The FHU Guest Artist Recital series will feature violist and violinist Dr. Christina McGann in a free concert Monday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m., in the Draughon Center for the Musical Arts.
Henderson, Tennessee — (Feb. 29, 2024) — Freed-Hardeman University’s Department of Creative and Communication Arts will host renowned violist and violinist Dr. Christina McGann as the next featured performer in the FHU Guest Artist Recital series. The concert will take place Monday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m., in the Draughon Center for the Musical Arts. Admission is free and open to the public. The performance will include pieces written by composers such as Sergei Prokofiev, Judith Markovich, Grażyna Bacewiz, Denise Ondishko, Henri Vieuxtemps and Johann Sebastian Bach.
Guest recitals allow students and the community to be impacted by the performers’ musicality, gifts and professional experience. “Listening to a wide variety of instrumentalists perform in concert is invaluable for the student musician – it broadens their musical understanding and opens the ear to new musical possibilities,” said Adam Booher, associate professor of music at FHU. “I am thrilled that our students can attend concerts on Freed-Hardeman’s campus and hear woodwinds in concert one week and strings another. Regular exposure to a variety of tone colors and instruments enriches our students’ musical education.”
As part of Freed-Hardeman’s commitment to community outreach, McGann will also teach a violin master class to a local high school violinist at 1 p.m. on March 4 in the Draughon Center for the Musical Arts.
McGann currently serves as the visiting assistant professor of viola and violin at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, concertmaster of the Nashville Opera Orchestra and the violinist of the Blair String Quartet. She has won top awards in national and international competitions for both solo and ensemble work. McGann obtained her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in violin performance from The Juilliard School, where she was accepted with presidential distinction. She received her doctoral degree from SUNY Stony Brook in New York.
She has traveled the world to share her talent, becoming a featured performer at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Merkin Hall in New York City and Symphony Space in Manhattan. She has also performed in various international venues, such as in Korea, El Salvador, Europe and Russia.
