Aarangam Dance Academy Students and Award-Winning Indian Musicians are Slated to Perform
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (9/19/2016) – This weekend, friend of On Location: MEMPHIS and owner of Aarangam Dance Academy, Haimanti Basu, will present an evening of Indian dance and music, with a variety of well-known musicians bringing their unique talents straight from India to the Bluff City.
On Saturday, September 24, Aarangam Dance Academy students will present their annual evening of Indian Classical Odissi Dance. 2016 Global Indian Music Academy Award (GIMA)-winning new-age percussionist and tabla maestro, Prodyut Mukherjee, will be part of the program as well. He will perform both solo and with his unique percussion-and-strings fusion concept band, Rhythmexpress. The group's record Moods won this year's GIMA award for best classical instrumental album. Also on hand will be Ustad Kamal Sabri, maestro of the Indian stringed instrument the sarangi.
Haimanti Basu, a resident of Germantown, is an Indian classical dance performer and instructor. She also serves as the overseas coordinator from the state of Tennessee for The Dance India magazine where she contributes cultural news. Her dance schools are located in Memphis and Jackson, Tennessee.
Saturday's program is slated for 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. inside the Longinotti Auditorium at St. Francis Hospital in East Memphis. Donations are accepted.
