A Powerful look at Mental Illness in the African American Community
March 24-April 2, 2017
AT THE EVERGREEN THEATRE
Memphis, TN, - In the African American community, mental illness issues are rarely discussed due to the fear of what others may think or underestimating the impact of the signs and symptoms of the sufferer. Inner City South debuts a gripping new original stage play, “Mind Games” in hopes to raise awareness and give people the confidence they need to seek help. This contemporary drama is set in Memphis, using a combination of dialogue and spoken word vignettes to tell the story of the Owens Family. A member of the Owens family tries to hide their unpredictable emotional changes from their love ones after being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. “Mind Games” will be presented Friday, March 24that 7:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Theatre. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.innercitysouth.com
Inner City South (ICS) emerged from Memphis’s underground spoken word movement in 2002. The husband and wife tandem are very passionate performers, and as playwrights use poetry as a vital element to their storytelling. In 2008, Inner City South became a resident theatre company at Evergreen Theatre. In 2016, Inner City South received “Best Drama” for their original stage play “Remy, From Fate There is No Escape” from the Diversity on Stage Awards. ICS push the boundaries of traditional theatre to bring a unique and entertaining voice to the Mid-South.
