Liberty Tech Awarded Advise TN College Advisor
Jackson, TN (September 29, 2016) – Liberty Tech High School in the Jackson-
Madison County School System, has been selected as a partner school for the new
statewide Advise TN college advising program, coordinated by the Tennessee
Higher Education Commission. Liberty Tech is one of thirty high schools across the
state who will receive an Advise TN college advisor who will work full time to ensure
that all students have the information and support needed to access college
opportunities.
“The Advise TN partner schools are a diverse and exciting group of high schools,”
said Mike Krause, Executive Director of THEC. “What each school brings to the
Advise TN program is a strong commitment to partnership and a relentless
dedication to helping students access higher education opportunities.”
Liberty Tech was selected from over one hundred schools participating in the Advise
TN application process, which included a proposal, letters of support from the
community and a team meeting between key Liberty Tech staff and THEC.
“Liberty Tech is very appreciative of this opportunity from Advise TN to propel
Liberty Tech students on a continued path toward college and career readiness that
we strive to instill in all Liberty Tech students,” stated Principal Timothy Gilmer.
“This program will provide additional tools and additional support for our students
and staff to enhance the processes we already have in place to support our
students in their journey to post-secondary education.”
The Advise TN college advisor will work closely with current Liberty Tech Counselors
to provide services to students and build upon work already being done at the
school. The college advisor will join the Liberty Tech team officially this October as
the Advise TN college advisor after having completed rigorous training on best
practices in financial aid, college and career advising and mentoring.
The mission of Liberty Tech High School is to create a learning environment that
actively engages all students in achieving proficiency, completing graduation
requirements, preparing for college, being job ready, and using advanced technical
skills for life-long learning. Liberty Tech High School offers multiple academic
pathways that students may choose to pursue as they work toward their high
school diploma. The Advise TN college advising program will strengthen the path to
achieve this mission.
Advise TN will serve approximately 14,000 junior and senior students statewide
during the 2016-2017 school year with individual college advising, career
exploration activities, and support in applying for financial aid and scholarships.
