UT MARTIN’S ‘CRUISIN’ WITH CARVER’ TOUR IS HUGE SUCCESS
MARTIN, Tenn. – Dr. Keith Carver, chancellor of the University of Tennessee at Martin,
recently completed his “Cruisin’ with Carver” tour of West and Middle Tennessee. Carver began
his duties as the university’s 10 th chancellor Jan. 3 and embarked on the whirlwind tour two days
later, ultimately spending 46 hours on the road.
One of Carver’s first priorities as chancellor was to meet faculty, staff and students at the five
UT Martin centers in Jackson, Parsons, Ripley, Selmer and Somerville as well as donors, alumni,
potential students and members of the working media across the region. That goal was
accomplished during visits to 17 cities in 13 counties between Jan. 5 and Feb. 23.
Carver visited 19 schools during his travels, including high schools, community colleges and
universities, and met with approximately 870 students total. Many of these students are high
school seniors who have already accepted offers of admission to UT Martin, but Carver also
spoke with juniors and dual enrollment students in some areas.
“These students represent the future of our state and region,” said Carver. “I feel it’s important
for them to know they are important to us and that we are grateful they’ve decided to start their
college journeys with us in the fall. These students will make up my first UT Martin freshman
class as chancellor, and in a way, I’ll be a freshman right along with them. I look forward to our
journey together."
The UT Martin chancellor also made 11 stops at major businesses and met with industry leaders
across West Tennessee to create relationships with these partners that could benefit UT Martin
students in the future. University donors and community members were also able to interact with
Carver during 15 donor events and public receptions held throughout the tour.
While the official “Cruisin’ with Carver” tour has ended, Carver is still making stops at high
schools in other areas as time allows.
