National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Gamma Psi Chapter held the 2 nd Annual

Literacy Luncheon on March 25 th at the Union University Carl Grant Events Center.

The program featured Laurice Lanier-Trowell, a native Jacksonian, graduate of

South Side High School and The Julliard School New York, NY as speaker and

performer. The theme for the luncheon was “Raising the Bar in Support of

Education”. Musical selection was performed by Shiloh Marie Sanders, fifth grade

student at Belle Forest Community School in Memphis and author of the book

“Shiloh’s Prayer”. Other performances were given by the Boys & Girls Choir of

Memphis under the conduction of founder, Fleming J. Ivory along with a musical

selection performed with Mrs. Lanier-Trowell.

Gamma Psi awarded two scholarships to two graduating seniors who were the

first and second place winners in the essay contest writing on “21 st Century

Educational Challenges for Minority Students”. First place winner Zachary West,

University School of Jackson student, received a $1,000 scholarship. His parents

are Dr. Henry and Mrs. Cynthia West. Jose` Chavez, Humboldt High School

student, was second place winner and received $500.00 scholarship. His parents

are Sandra and Julian Chavez.

This event supports one of our national YES programs of literacy. We hope that

we can further inspire others to promote literacy where ever they may have

contact. Patricia Taylor and Roslyn Wilson were co-chairs for the event.
