State Representative Jimmy Eldridge Urges Jackson City Council to Rescind School Defunding Decision
State Representative Jimmy Eldridge is calling on the Jackson City Council to rescind today’s vote to defund public schools.
Eldridge said today, “This hasty decision to balance the city’s budget by defunding public education is a critical mistake that will have long term negative effects. The debt maturity owes to youth is education. The debt the city owes should not be funded by sacrificing our school children that are not yet old enough to vote.”
Eldridge continued, “Elected officials have to make difficult decisions on a regular basis, but we cannot ever view properly funding children’s education as merely an option. Today’s city council leaders sacrificed the education of tomorrow’s leaders. This was not our city’s finest hour, but this decision can be reversed, and therefore, on behalf of the good people of my district, I call on the Jackson City Council to reconvene, reverse this mistake, and find another way. We can do better.”
State Representative Eldridge represents the 73rd house district of Tennessee, which includes portions of Jackson, Madison County.
