BELLS OF PEACE TO COMMEMORATE WORLD WAR I ARMISTICE
MARTIN, Tenn. – Bells across the nation will toll 11 strikes at 11 a.m. local time, Sunday, Nov.
11, in commemoration of the end of World War I and the signing of an armistice between Allied
forces and Germany on Nov. 11, 1918. This year is the 100 th -anniversary celebration of the end
of the war.
The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been designated the “honorary bell of
peace,” and a special memorial will be held in Independence Hall to mark the occasion.
Dr. Alice-Catherine Carls, Tom Elam Distinguished Professor of History at the University of
Tennessee at Martin, is a member of the Great War Commission, which works to memorialize
the contributions of Tennesseans during the war. She helped coordinate the Bells of Peace event
in Northwest Tennessee and was instrumental in securing a grant to restore the World War I
Memorial Foundation in Jackson. The restored fountain will be dedicated at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 17,
on the northeast lawn of the Madison County Courthouse.
