REFUGE will be performed nightly at Northside United Methodist Church's Hope Hall
Each year, the youth at Northside United Methodist church in Jackson prays about a topic and writes an original screenplay to address the issues that they feel comes to the top, typically this issue is one that is pressing tightly on society. This year's musical, set in the 1930s, seeks to address a question that perhaps all of us have pondered: Can we trust a God who allows bad things to happen to good people?

Refuge
Chandler Vonn works hard to provide a good home for his family. As a bank manager in a small farming community, many friends depend on him in some way for their security. Then, the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929 hits. As banks and businesses begin to fail, many friends lose their jobs and homes. In the midst of the crisis, his home - the Vonn family home - becomes a refuge, a safe haven, for families in distress. Loans from his bank become the last hope for failing farms and businesses, and Chandler Vonn is grateful for the ability to help provide for family and friends.
But even to a good man, bad things do happen - things that are beyond personal control - financial loss, betrayal, injustice. How does one explain unfair and heartbreaking circumstances in the life of an upright, God-fearing man?
The youth of Northside United Methodist Church invite you to travel back to 1933, to the Great Depression, and to confront that timeless and universal dilemma: Can we trust a God who allows bad things to happen to good people?
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still.”
