Cerro Gordo Celebrates pastor and First Lady Larry and Brenda Mercer’s 30th Church Anniversary

The journey of a lifetime begins with one step. Thirty years ago, Larry Mercer, then a fledgling minister, and his wife Brenda stepped into the role of Pastor and First Lady of Cerro Gordo Baptist Church.

“It is a journey that has been full of blessings,” said Rev Mercer when asked to reflect a little on the years that have passed.

“When my wife and I began this journey we had no idea that we would still be here 30 years later,” said Rev Mercer whose steps he says were preordained by the Lord.

Last Friday the First Couple was treated to a elegant banquet, celebrating their journey as leaders of the flock at the small but dynamic church located on the outskirts of Jackson in Denmark, TN.

The event was held on the historic campus of Lane College inside the Kirkendoll Center, with more than 300 in attendance.

The keynote speaker for the event was the pastor’s brother, Rev. Dr. Marvin Mercer - himself celebrating 30 years in the ministry this year as well.

“This has truly been a year of celebration,” said Rev. Mercer with a smile. “We celebrated the 152nd anniversary of Cerro Gordo in August, and my wife and I celebrated 50 years of marriage on October 29th. “

On November 22nd Rev Mercer will celebrate his 73rd birthday.

“No. I never imagined that Brenda and I would be at Cerro Gordo for 30 years,” said Rev Mercer. Then he chuckled and added; I didn’t think we’d still be married after 50 years either. “
