Southern League MVP, Generals kick off Championship Series tonight in Jackson at 6:05 pm
Jackson, Tenn. – The awards keep rolling in for slugger Tyler O’Neill, who was named Double-A Player of the Year by Baseball America Monday. The Jackson outfielder had a banner year, hitting .293 with 24 home runs and 102 RBI in the regular season before what has already been a big postseason.
This is the second honor for O’Neill from Baseball America since the end of the regular season. Last week, the industry standard named him an outfielder for its Minor League All-StarTeam which includes players from every level of minor league baseball. Monday, O’Neill was one of 15 Double-A Players named an All-Star by Baseball America and the publication named him the level’s best player.
O’Neill was also named the Southern League MVP prior to the end of the regular season, making him the franchise’s second-ever MVP and first since 2004. He was both a Mid-Season and a Postseason All-Star in the Southern League after a season that saw him drive in a franchise-record 102 runs.
In the playoffs, O’Neill has done it all for the Generals. In four games against Montgomery in the North Division Series, he went 7-for-15 with three home runs and six RBI to help the Generals advance to the Southern League Championship Series for the first time since 2012. He hit the walk-off winner in game one, and added long balls in the team’s other two wins as well.
O’Neill and the rest of the Generals take on the Mississippi Braves in game one of the best-of-five Championship Series Monday Night at 6:05 pm CT. The Generals are out for their second Southern League title, and first since 2000! O’Neill along fellow postseason honorees Tim Lopes, Ryan Yarbrough and Daren Brown will be honored on the field before first pitch!
