Jacoby Jones and Obie Beard Among Lane College Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

On Friday, October 7, 2016, eight individuals will be immortalized in the history books of Lane

College Athletics, when they are inducted in the college’s Sports Hall of Fame. Among the

athletes inducted will be former NFL player and Superbowl Champion Jacoby Jones, who played

his college ball at Lane, and renown boxer, Obie Beard.

I am honored to have been chosen by my Lane College family, faculty, and friends, as one of the

inductees for the Lane College Sports Hall Of Fame, says Beard. I am thankful that my past

experiences and training, including my time at Lane, have enabled me to become a coach and

mentor to other young men and women who have a passion to become a disciplined and skilled

boxer.”

Jacoby Jones, who went on to spend 9 seasons in the NFL after leaving Lane, echoes Beard’s

sentiments. “First, I give and have the most respect to the ones before me, Fred Lane, Dr. J.L.

Perry and Dr. Wesley C. McClure who laid the foundation for me to follow as a student and

young man. To be named as a Hall of Fame Honoree is a God given blessing and I am grateful

that Lane College gave me a chance and opportunity at life.”

Others being inducted include local businessman James “Super” Wolfe, for accomplishments in

football while at Lane, Dr. JL Perry, Basketball Coach and Athletic Director, Fred Lane-

Football, Barrington Martin-Football, Neal “Big Daddy” McCall-Football Coach, and Joycelyn

Austin-Softball.

The induction ceremony will take place at 7:00 pm on Friday, October 7, at J.D. Lane Health and

Physical Education Complex on the campus of Lane College. Tables of 8 are available for

$500.00, as well as individual tickets for $65.00. Tickets include dinner as well as the induction
