Lane College Announces Remaining Black History Month Events

Jackson Tenn. (February 14, 2020) Lane College presents "The Chuck Rainey Experience: A Black History Month Salute to a Living Lane Music Legend" from February 23 through February 28.  

Chuck Rainey attended Lane College the fall of 1959 through the spring semester of 1960.  He went on to have a successful career in music as a highly sought-after electric bass player who worked with an endless list of iconic artists including Michael Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Paul Simon, Bette Midler, Quincy Jones, and Aretha Franklin.

Rainey is a 2019 inductee to the Lane College Alumni Hall of Distinction.  

In observance of Black History month, Rainey returns to the Lane Campus to share his keys to success in the entertainment industry and in life.

“Although I did not graduate, I am very proud to have experienced at Lane College the beginning of attempting a career in music. I am looking forward to…Black History month,” Rainey said.  

Lane is hosting a series of events that will allow its students and the rest of the community to learn from and about the music legend. 

Sunday, February 23 – Movie: Amazing Grace, Aretha Franklin’s concert film featuring Rev. James Cleveland and Chuck Rainey; Q&A with Chuck Rainey afterward – Cyber Café in Water Tower Place - Refreshments at 3:30 p.m. with the film at 4 p.m.

Monday, February 24 – Music Clinic taught by, Chuck Rainey - choir room in the old JCM building, 11 a.m.

Wednesday, February 26 - Lane College Bands’ Black History Month Concert with guest appearance by Chuck Rainey – CMAC Auditorium, 6 p.m.

Friday, February 28 – An Evening with Chuck Rainey – conversation with Chuck Rainey; musical tributes by the Lane College Jazz Band, Lane College Concert Choir, and Dave Clark Community Band - CMAC Auditorium – Refreshments at 5:30 pm with the Concert at 6 p.m.  

Additional Programs include, “400th Anniversary of Enslavement: A Panel Discussion about Africans Forced into Slavery in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619,” taking place on Tuesday, February 25 in the CMAC auditorium at 6:30 pm. 

All events will be held on the Lane campus, free of charge, and are open to the public.
