FHU's Annual Mission Emphasis Days Inspires Students
Henderson, Tennessee (Sept. 14, 2022) — The College of Biblical Studies at Freed-Hardeman University hosted its annual Missions Emphasis Days Sept. 7-8, 2022, according to Dr. Kevin L. Moore, FHU director of missions.
“The annual two-day event seeks to expose the entire student body to the concept of missions and increase interest and involvement in missionary work,” Moore said.
Regularly scheduled Bible classes are dismissed for the two days. Instead, students engage with missionaries from around the world. Visiting speakers and the countries where they have worked include Daniel and Tiffany Gaines, Tanzania; Barton Kizer, Peru; Trent Kennedy, Paraguay and Singapore; and Nkosi Mpofu, Zimbabwe.
Displays promoting a variety of stateside and international mission works were exhibited in the lobby of Brown-Kopel Business Center.
Judging by the comments of current FHU students, Missions Emphasis Days had the desired effect. They report an increased interest in mission classes and in doing mission work themselves.
“I was interested in mission work without Missions Emphasis days, but the presentation I saw last year during those days transformed how I thought about mission work,” Abigail Leland, a junior from Midway, Texas, said.
Brady Holaday, a missions major from Durant, Oklahoma, said, “Mission Emphasis Day influenced me to take more mission classes, which has led me to do more local and travel mission work.” Sarah Johnson, a missions major from Sandpoint, Idaho, and Mattie Adams, a nursing major from Richmond, Kentucky, also reported being influenced and encouraged to do more mission work.
“I was influenced last year by Lance Mosher’s presentation on Missions Emphasis Day to do domestic mission work in the future,” Walker Howell, a ministry major from Stockbridge, Georgia, said. Mosher was last year’s missionary-in-residence at FHU.
