Extension programs open to all

The University of Tennessee Extension and Tennessee State University Cooperative Extension

work together in Madison County to provide real life solutions for all people who live and work

here. Our staff offers educational programs and materials in all areas of production agriculture,

home horticulture, natural resources, family and consumer sciences, and 4-H youth development.

Our programs are offered to all persons regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or

disability. We want you to know that our services are always available to your organization and its

members.

Various educational opportunities are conducted throughout the year. To keep up-to-date on

Life in the State of Poverty

Eat Healthy – Be Active child care

provider training series (9 hours) March 14, 28 and April 11 | 6-9 p.m.

Madison County Ag Complex, 309 N. Parkway

This workshop series provides easy to follow information

for child care providers to incorporate into their lives. By

implementing some simple ideas, participants can feel

their best to be active role models for children.

Cost: $10 for all three workshops paid on first night or $5

per workshop. Pay your fee at the workshop. Registration

to aelizer@utk.edu by March 13 required.

Nutrition Education programs EFNEP and TNCEP are educational program for families

and youth, particularly families with young children.

Families who enroll in the program receive a series of

lessons, at no cost to them, on how to choose and prepare

healthy foods. Education focuses on...

• Selecting and preparing nutritious foods

• Managing food resources wisely

• Handling foods safely

• Participating in regular physical activity

Soil Sample Update As of January 1 2017, Soil, Plant and Pest Center Soil test

have increased to $15.00 per sample. UT-TSU Extension

Madison County office will ship the soil sample for the

individual, but there is a $3.00 charge making the total

$18.00 per sample. The SPPC are no longer offering the

Basic Soil Test. The Plus Test is the main option, which

supplies the customer with: Water pH, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Mn,

Fe, Cu, Na, B, Lime and Fertilizer recommendation for up to

4 crop codes per sample. Samples should be taking in 8-10

different locations at a depth of 6 inches per sample. Core

Sample should be from soil surface to 6 inches deep and an

inch wide. Mix the 8-10 core samples together. The better

you mix the better your sample will be. Plus Test are

normally analyzed and reported within 1-2 business days.

Samples cannot be tested until payment is received or

arrangements are made.

 

Pesticide Recertification

Feb. 15 @ 9 a.m.

Feb. 28 @ 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

UT-TSU Extension Madison County will be offering

Pesticide Recertification Classes on February 15 at 9:00

a.m. and on February 28 at 9:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. These

classes will be going over herbicide stewardship with the

new dicamba and 2,4-D traits that are coming out for the

2017 growing season. In order to purchase restricted

herbicides producers have to attend either a recertification

or certification class. These are recertification classes, if

you need to be certified please contact the extension office

to schedule a time. Recertification classes usually take

about an hour and cost $25.00. Certification classes usually

take 4 hours and cost $75.00.

Monthly Meetings

Jackson Club and Honor Club are usually held the

first Monday of August through May. The Jackson

Club is open to any students who do not have 4-H in

their school. Honor Club is by application.

4-H Military Club

Registration for the 4-H Military Club is open to all

youth in grades 4 through 12. Join other military

youth for a fun-filled club where you will participate

in gardening, robotics, cooking, and much more! For

100K Tree Day – Feb. 25

Participate in the largest community tree-planting

event in Tennessee history! Receive 5-20 free native

tree seedlings. Available trees are eastern red bud,

shumard (red) oak, Virginia pine, American plum and

yellow tulip poplar. These are available while

supplies last, but order must be placed by February

19.

Friday, February 24.

 

When to Prune What- That is the

question!

Class will cover proper time to prune various

landscape plants including flowering shrubs,

evergreens, trees, even backyard fruit plantings.

Demonstration on proper technique and tool

maintenance will be presented.

Class covers the basics on soil health and preparation

for conventional vegetable gardens, raised beds,

foundation plantings, and landscape beds. Your

plants will be only as productive as your soil is, so it

is important to start out on the right foot. 5 FREE Soil

Samples will be given away to those who attend! So

come prepared with 2 cups of soil from your planting
