DAR Announces 2018 Women in History Award Recipient
Jackson-Madison Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) announced the 2018 NSDAR Women in History Award winner at the DAR Patriotic Tea held on March 15, 2018. Chapter Historian Gwen McReynolds presented the award to chapter member Jamie Carden Boone for her outstanding work locally in preserving the historic Bemis Cemetery, and honoring the memories of World War I veterans who are buried there.
March is “Women’s History Month” and DAR chapters across the country are encouraged to honor local women who contribute to historic preservation and education.
Ms. Boone is an active volunteer genealogist and has assisted many local residents with their genealogy research. She researched the history of the Bemis Cemetery and located the graves of the World War I veterans interred there. Ms. Boone organized and led a clean-up group who cleaned the veterans’ tombstones with archival safe cleanser; installed American flags at each grave; and led the 2017 Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery to name and honor the World War I veterans there. She has regularly returned to the cemetery for further touch ups of the tombstones, and to remove weeds and vegetation at the graves.
