Bemis Historical Society will hold a monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 16, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bemis Mill Village Museum located at 2 North Missouri Street in Jackson.
Butler Street, like the town of Bemis itself, has experienced many changes since the 1960s and 1970s, but its historic link to African-American progress in West Tennessee remains. Former Bemis resident Rev. Greg M. Hammond, grandson of the late Bemis Mill employee Rev. Ransom Hammond, will recall narratives, both personal and communal, to highlight the legacy of Butler Street, formerly Congo Street, and its families.
Prospective members and visitors are welcome to attend. The 100-year-old museum building is handicap accessible. Browse the museum to enjoy the artifacts and to visit the museum’s Company Store or visit online at bemishistory.org to see our historical ornaments, Bemis and Chat ‘N Chew baseball caps, vintage photos, keepsake hand-held fan, etc. Annual Society membership dues are $25 and can be paid at the meeting or mailed to PO Box 9266, Jackson, TN 38314-9266.
