Infielder hit .371 with nine extra-base hits over first nine games of season

Jackson, Tenn. – Ten games into 2017, the Generals have the best record in the Southern League and the circuit’s first Player of the Week. Colin Walsh was honored after taking the Southern League by storm over his first nine games of the season. The award spans the games from Opening Day to Easter Sunday.

Walsh, 27, hit .371 over nine games with a pair of home runs and seven doubles. As of Monday, Walsh leads the league in doubles, extra-base hits (9), slugging percentage (.743), total bases (26) and walks (9). Walsh also finds himself tied for the high-water mark in hits (13), while placing in the top three in runs batted in and on-base percentage.

The infielder hat two hits in six of the nine games he played in for the Generals. In three of those contests, both of his hits went for extra bases. Walsh’s first homer came in Jackson’s 20-run outburst April 9, and he drove in all three of the team’s runs against Mobile April 15 in a win.

This is Walsh’s first season with the Diamondbacks after spending parts of his first seven professional campaigns with the Cardinals, Brewers and Athletics. He started last year in the big leagues, appearing in 38 contests with the Milwaukee Brewers. He was originally a 13th round pick of the Cardinals in 2010 out of Stanford.
