Union men add win in GSC play against Delta State
JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 74-67 win over Delta State University Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 16-7 overall and 10-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State dropped to 8-15 on the season and 4-11 in league play.
Delta State scored the first three points of the game with a three pointer from Keyshaun Street, but the lead was quickly gone after Union went on a 16-0 run within the first five minutes of the game. Union controlled the rest of the first half on both sides of the ball, however the Statesmen did manage to trim the lead down to five with Union ahead 32-27 with 50 seconds left in the half. The first half ended with Union up eight, 35-27.
In the second half the game would become a back and forth affair with both teams trading baskets. Eight minutes into the second half the lead would be trimmed down to only one for the Bulldogs as Anderson McCoy made a layup for the Statesmen that made the score 46-45. Although a tight second half, Union would pull away and with only 1:27 left in the game the Bulldogs would reach their largest lead of the night at 72-59 for a 13-point differential. At the conclusion of the game the final score was 74-67.
Union had three leading scorers tonight. Tyree Boykin, Terrandus Smith, and Payton Stovall all had 14 points. Stovall also scored his 500th point during this game. LiDonta Hicks-Gentry added another 13 points. Ousmane Gueye led the team in rebounds with 10. Union shot 48 percent (28-59) from the field, 39 percent (10-26) from three, and 89 percent (8-9) from the free throw line.
Delta State was led by Street with 20 points and Cartwright with 18 points. The Statesmen shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field, 30 percent (6-20) from 3-point range, and 88 percent (7-8) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a road GSC matchup against the University of Montevallo, Thursday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m.
