Union women's basketball defeats Delta State 80-66
JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 80-66 win against Delta State University Saturday afternoon at Fred Delay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 19-4 overall and 13-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State dropped to 16-6 on the season and 9-6 in league play.
Union came out strong, taking a 24-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same as Union outscored Delta State 7-17 to set the score 41-18 at the half. Delta State put together a solid second half, outscoring Union in both the third and fourth quarters, but was unable to take the lead. Union took the win, 80-66.
Union's largest lead was 25 points in the second quarter.
Freshman guard Shanique Lucas led Union with a career-high 21 points. Jada Smith scored 18 points, while Jaelencia Williams and Caroline Hogue added 14 and 10 respectively. Williams added nine rebounds and Smith added eight. The Lady Bulldogs shot 48 percent from the field, 54 percent (7-13) from 3-point range, and 65 percent (11-17) from the free throw line.
Delta State was led by Patterson with 23 points and 14 rebounds. The Lady Statesmen shot 32 percent from the field, 26 percent (5-19) from long range, and 72 percent (13-18) from the free throw line.
Union heads to Alabama for a pair of games next week. First at Montevallo Thursday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m. before heading to West Alabama on Saturday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m.
