Miss Bronze 2023 crowned Pageant awarded $5,000 to high school seniors
JACKSON (TN) — The Jackson (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held its 63rd annual Miss Bronze West Tennessee Scholarship Pageant this past Saturday to support high school senior girls.
For over six decades, the pageant has helped area youth by awarding the Miss Bronze winner and runner-ups with scholarship money to attend a higher-education institution of learning, JTAC President Wanda Newsom said.
The pageant was founded by Delta Anna Cooke during segregation so that African American young ladies had the opportunity to compete for scholarship funds for college.
“This will aid in helping them and their families,” Newsom said about $5,000 being divided among the winners.
Six ladies participated in the pageant, which was open to girls residing in the chapter’s service area of Haywood County, Hardeman County, Madison County, and the southern portion of State Route 420 in Gibson County.
The pageant returned in-person this year after the coronavirus pandemic. In 2022, the pageant was virtual – the first time since the pageant’s 1960 founding. The pageant was cancelled in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, and only the essay component was used in 2021.
