Jackson, TN chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority welcomes new members

First time to do so in a decade

The Jackson (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. welcomed 55 new members to the sorority on April 20 –- the first time in 10 years.

The new members join a sisterhood of predominantly Black, college-educated women who support the community with programming and initiatives focused on: economic development; educational development; physical and mental health; political awareness and involvement; and international awareness and involvement.

“Having 55 new members will strengthen the development of our chapter programs and make a major impact in our service area,” JTAC president Wanda Newsom said.

The chapter’s service area includes Haywood County, Hardeman County, Madison County, and the southern portion of State Route 420 in Gibson County.

Fifty-five new members also means an increased presence and “impactful moves in our community,” said Frenchie Fuller, the chapter’s first vice president and chair of membership.

Already, the ladies have worked or volunteered to help the community in the areas of social justice, public service, law, mental health, education and business, among others. They’ll add value to the sorority and the chapter by leveraging their connections and expertise to support the local communities JTAC serves.

JTAC is one of over 900 collegiate and alumnae chapters of the sorority; new members join the sorority through those chapters. Because it’s been a decade since new members joined through JTAC, both Newsom and Fuller said their membership marks a special time for the chapter.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Its public service primarily focuses on the Black community.
