April 15 celebration event to be open to the public
JACKSON (TN) — Nearly 80 years ago, a group of women chartered what is now the Jackson (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
To celebrate the chapter's history and continuing legacy, JTAC is hosting a 78th Chapter Anniversary Celebration – Chartering Our Course for the Future: The Legacy Continues.
This will be the first such celebration the chapter has hosted.
“The chapter celebrates 78 years of providing educational, economical and health development programs as well as raising awareness about social issues throughout the areas we serve,” chapter president Wanda Newsom said. “It’s important to celebrate that.”
JTAC was chartered on April 25, 1945, in Jackson, TN, by Deltas Martha Anderson, Anna Lee Cooke, Louise Howard Fournier, Essie Mae Golden, Grace Johnson, Willie Bell Rawls, Daisy Ruth Trotter Shaw, Arva Lee Hildreth Sims, Dorothy L. Clem Stevens and Myram Chatman White.
The anniversary celebration will be April 15 at 4pm at the DoubleTree Hotel in Jackson. Along with a dinner, attendants will enjoy a program highlighting JTAC’s longtime members as well as the chapter’s work over the years, including: voter registration drives, economic empowerment events, teen summits, health fairs and other decades-long initiatives that serve the communities in Hardeman, Haywood, Madison and parts of Gibson counties.
Those interested can still purchase $50 tickets by contacting the chapter at jaxtnalumnae1945@gmail.com.
