Council Buchanan shares "Enlightening Thoughts" at Gamma Psi's Black History Program
National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Gamma Psi Sorority observed Black History with a recognition program at St. James Missionary Baptist Church. The theme for the program was "Honoring the Past, Through Bravery and Hope". The speaker for the event was Councilman Harvey Buchanan expressing "Enlightening Thoughts" on African-American History from the past to the present.
Honorees recognized were: Pastor Ernest Polk, Pastor of St. James, for Spiritual Leadership; Jason Bridgeman, North Side High School Principal, for Administrator of the Year; Mayor William "Bill" Rawls, Jr., Mayor of Brownsville, TN, for Mayor of the Year, First African-American Mayor in the history of Brownsville, TN; Dr. Shavetta Conner, Physician of the Year; and Doretha Brice, Social Services Worker of the Year.
Distinguished Student awards were given to the following students: Jordan Branch, Crockett County High School, Alamo; Trever Dancy, Haywood High School, Brownsville; Eren Brooks, Madison Academic High School, Jackson; De'Marius Bonds, Liberty Tech Magnet High School, Jackson; Makayla Haith, Liberty Tech Magnet High School, Jackson; Jadarian Merriweather, Madison Academic High School, Jackson; and Sierra Dickerson, Liberty Tech Magnet High School, Jackson. Gamma Psi Xinos and Kudos participated in the program.
